Climbing on Marangu route is less challenging and suitable for climbers doubting their health conditions. It is beautiful with high success rate.
Itinerary
Marangu Gate 1800mts – Mandara Huts 2700mts:
You will have the transfer from hotel to Marangu gate 1800mts for formalities. After which you will start the 9kms gradual within the rain forest climb to Mandara Hut. Hike slowly and quiet as you take memories of the forest with often blue and Colubus monkeys hang between the branches feeding on leaves and fruits of the forest. It is an easy day but you must respect the altitude by climbing slowly and drinking as much as you can. You will have your dinner and overnight in the huts.
Mandara Huts 2700mts- Horombo Huts 3700mts:
You will wake up at 6:30am with hot tea in bed. You will have full breakfast at 7:30am and leave at 8:00am towards Horombo Huts. You will come out of the forest after a half an hour to heather zone with the trail that is more regular. If the day is clear, you will enjoy the view of the two picks Mawenzi and Kibo. The total distance you will cover is 15kms and it takes up to 7hrs. You will have your lunch on the way and have dinner and overnight in the huts.
Horombo Huts 3700mts; This is your day for acclimatization. You will wake up at 7:00am with hot drink in bed and have full breakfast at 8:00am. You will then hike slowly up to zebra rocks 3950mts and then come back at the camp for lunch, dinner, and overnight in the huts.
Horombo Huts 3700mts – Kibo Hut 4700mts:
You will wake up at 6:30 with a hot drink inside your bed with breakfast at 7:30am. You will then start your climb to Kibo with a more regular ascend in the heather and moorland and then alpine desert and later complete desert. The crossing in the plane of Saddle is light but truly exhausting. Within the Saddle, you might encounter headache that will possibly disappear at the Kibo Huts after relaxing. Drinking water and slow climb is ideal. Dinner and overnight will be in the huts.
Kibo Huts 4700mts – Uhuru point 5895mts-Horombo huts 3700mts:
You will wake up at mid night for breakfast before the start of a 7kms to the summit attempt. You will start ascending very regularly and later steeply as the trail goes up within the Volcanic Ashes. You will take almost 5hrs to the first highest point ‘Gilman’s Point’ 5686mt. Some meters before reaching Gilman’s point will really need good mental preparations; it is steep and rocky and you need to volunteer and stay positive. From here, it takes up to 1hr30mins to Uhuru point. After the summit Uhuru point, you descend easily to Kibo base camp taking less than 2hrs30mns with some people taking 1hr 30mns. Later you will descend to Horombo Hut for the last night at the mountain.
Horombo Huts 3720mts -Marangu Gate 1800mts (24kms 6-7hrs)
Wake-up at 6:30am with breakfast at 7:00am restart descending at 7:30am with hot Lunch at Mandara Hut. Proceed to Marangu Gate for a short ceremony together with the team and award diplomas to mark our success then transfer to hotel for dinner and overnight.
